About this listen

“Scott, it's Rebecca. I need you.” After years of silence, Texan lawyer Scott Fenney receives a devastating phone call from his ex-wife. She has been accused of murdering her boyfriend, Trey - the man she left Scott for - and is being held in a police cell. Now she is begging Scott to defend her. Scott is used to high-stakes cases, but this one is bigger than anything he has handled before. If Rebecca is found guilty, she will be sentenced to life imprisonment. Her future is in his hands. As he prepares to take the stand in the most dramatic courtroom appearance of his life, Scott is forced to question everything he believes to get to the truth - to save the life of the ex-wife he still loves...

Critic reviews

"For my money, Grisham has grown stale over the past five years while Gimenez has gone from strength to strength…this is one of the best legal thrillers since Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent in 1987." ( Daily Mail)

This is only the 2nd Mark Gimenez book I’ve listen to and so far I’m enjoying the characters and plots. I love listening to Jeff Harding’s narration, the only downside to that, after listening to all Lee Child’s books one after the other, I was waiting for Jack Reacher to come in and save the day!

Thanks to Mark for a great book and Jeff for an excellent performance.

Good plot

I enjoyed the color of law with the same central characters. This book follows on from it and has a good pace, story and the narrator was excellent I highly recommend this book.

Great follow up

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would certainly recommend this book but I would say, read 'The Colour of Law' first as this is a sequel to that book.

What did you like best about this story?

Like the first book the storey keeps going at a good pace, it holds your interest. Although it revolves heavily around the law, it doesn't delve deaply into it, it's not complicated, which in my opinion makes it an easy listen. Great for walking the dogs!

What about Jeff Harding’s performance did you like?

I like Jeff Harding, I have listened to a few books he's narrated and I think he's excellent. I will say however that Pete Bradbury read the first book and in my opinion, his voice seemed to suit the characters better. It annoyed me a little in this book whent the pronunciation of Pajamae's name was changed from Paschamae to Pajamy.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I wouldn't say it moved me but the very end of the book on the boat, I wasn't expecting the narrative, perhaps I should have been.

Any additional comments?

I hope there are more in this series, I enjoyed the characters and would like to see how they develop.

Another good listen from Mark Gimenez

Jeff Harding's performance is excellent, as always. In fact, I chose this book from looking at things he had narrated.

The writing is good too - I mean the actual prose.

I did find the story interesting, though as a lawyer myself I really wonder if the procedures around the trial itself were really in accordance with Texas law. It all seemed remarkably ad hoc, with new witnesses popping from nowhere with previously unheard testimony. The stuff about the judge's political reasons for her conduct of the trial would worry me a lot if I were in Texas!

I also detected echoes of other crime novels, which I suppose is almost inevitable.

I did enjoy listening to it though and was keen to get to the end and see what the outcome was. Although I didn't have much sympathy for the alleged killer as a person - can there really be women in the US married for years to successful lawyers but who are so infantilised they don't even have their own bank accounts?

Although this is the second in a series, I didn't feel it was necessary to have heard the first one. I'm going to buy another one from this stable.

Enjoyable listen

Read this on the back of the colour of law and was equally gripped. A really enjoyable
listen tied up any loose ends from the previous book. Like his other book a little slow to get going but once it does it romps away.

Great follow up

Now for book 3! This was truly excellent in every way including the super narration.

Fantastic

Not as good as "The Goveners Wife" which was a serious read. At times I thought I was reading a comedy & it did make me smile. On the whole I enjoyed this sequel to "The Goveners Wife"

Enjoyable

I wish the voice actor pronounced Pajame’s name in the same way as the first author

An excellent book though. I will be buying number 3 immediately
