About this listen

When the Stormriders attack, Ary’s people have little chance.

Can he find a way to defeat them?

At 19, Ary has spent 10 years mourning his father’s death. The aftermath of the attack still haunts him. Now, on the eve of the draft, he faces his greatest fear: being sent to become a marine.

He knows the cost of war.

All he wants is to marry Charlene, whom he has loved since they were kids. Building a farm and starting a family sounds perfect. There’s just one problem; his best friend, Vel, adores her, too. He’d give anything for peace.

But wanting the Stormriders to stop attacking isn’t going to make it happen.

For love, for his people, and especially for the life he wants, Ary makes a decision that will change everything.

The adventure begins.

You’ll love this beautifully creative dark fantasy, because James Reid knows how to create characters and worlds you’ll grow to adore.

I love the premise for this series! I like a few of the characters. The back and forth is a little deterring, but not overly done. The narration is phenomenal! I can't wait for the rest of this series to be put into audio. I may have to just read them! I need to know where this goes.

Delightful Twist

Above the Storm is the first book of Reid's The Storm Below series, and it is one beast of a book!

There is a lot going on in this tome, so I won't rehash the entire story, but it begins with Ary and Chaylene as they go through their rite of passage to become adults, thus receiving their blessings from the gods. At the same time, there is drafting into the army, and Chaylene is, unfortunately, one of those who are chosen. This puts a stop to Ary and Chaylene's plans of going back to their village and living out their days as ostridge farmers.

But, unbeknownst to them, Ary has received perhaps not a blessing, but a curse, and outside forces work to have him killed - in order to save the world.

Above the Storm is an incredibly ambitious book, with unique world-building and plenty of fleshed-out characters. Their emotional struggles are clearly depicted and run through the entirety of the book, leaving no doubts of their wishes, hopes, and dreams. The anger and hurt in Ary, for example, is wonderfully displayed. My only real gripe in this book is the love triangle, but since that is a matter of personal preference, I will not include it in my review.

The battles are intense and high stakes, and the descriptions throughout the book are fabulous. This is a well-written book, enhanced further by Zachary Johnson's narrating. Kudos to him for being able to pronounce the avian race names!

Oh, and speaking of those! I absolutely loved the strange avian race and their clucks, feathers, and gizzards. Fantastic! Above the Storm is a great start to a series.

Unique and sweeping high fantasy
