About this listen

An invitation to stay with childhood friends seems an excellent idea to aid Helena's recovery after her cancer treatment. Helena grew up with the Hickmans and had spent many happy holidays with them. The fact that they live in a castle surrounded by forest makes it an even more perfect spot to recuperate.

But when a man is found burned to death in a car, the apparently irrelevant though horrific incident creates unexpected disturbances. Helena and Eisenmenger, caught in the middle of it all, cannot understand why. But the unpleasantness grows and worse is to come, for secrets are unearthed that concern not only the Hickmans, but also Helena and her past.

Loved the book , they must be read in sequence to benefit fully
Sean Barrett is the best narrator I look for his work to find good books to listen to
The author, having the benefit of a better education than I, uses words I need to look up in the dictionary,, this is a good thing as I learn from him and I like that.

For lovers of language and good plots

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I like Keith McCarthy's books but you have to be prepared to 'suspend disbelief' quite a lot with this one and I didn't really warm to the new characters that much. Not withstanding this comment I do enjoy the books and ,as always, Sean Barrett's reading brings anything to life.

What was most disappointing about Keith McCarthy’s story?

It was a bit too far fetched

Which scene did you most enjoy?

None in particular

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not as much as some

Any additional comments?

It was badly edited and so rather irritating. I have never before found so many repetitions in a book where obviously the 'cutting and pasting' wasn't done properly. I kept thinking that I must have pressed something by mistake but actually it wasn't me; it was the poor editing!

Stretches credibility a bit too far!

I'm listening to the series in chronological order and definitely recommend doing this to get the best out of each book as knowing what has happened to the three main characters in the past is often important to understanding the current story. This 4th book in the series is a gripping thriller that answers some of the questions that have been left hanging from the early novels.
Part of the pleasure of these booksis the sardonic style of writing full of ascerbic asides and colourful similes to tickle ones imagination, though I did feel the author overdid this at times. Nevetheless, I was gripped by the story and will certainly continued with the series.

Another riveting forsenic thriller

Reasonable story - very poor editing. Cringe making sex scenes. Apparently you have to have fifteen words in a review and see above

You have to have a headline

Easy listening but still intriguing.
Love the narrator. Will look out for more story's narrated by him and and more story's by the author.

I’ve read the rest in this series and enjoyed them but sadly couldn’t get past chapter one. Just couldn’t engage with it.

Narration was good.

Hugely Disappointing :(

What a shame! I really loved the sardonic tone of the narrator. The tale dripped with irony using fantastic turns of phrase. The narrator, Sean Barrett, was exceptional as usual. Sadly though, the actual tale seemed to just miss the mark. I do not know whether this is because it seemed to be a follow on but stand-alone book and I may have missed intricate clues earlier on or whether it was not a strong enough story. I will definitely try Keith McCarthy again because I so enjoyed his sarcasm!

Great writing but weak storyline
