Summary

Jake Brigance, the protagonist of John Grisham's classic legal thriller A Time to Kill, is back. This time he's at the epicentre of a sensational murder trial that bitterly divides the citizens of Clanton, Mississippi.

John Grisham's A Time to Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. It established Jake as a classic American hero - a lawyer who sought truth and justice at all costs, even when his life and reputation were on the line.

Brigance returned in 2013's Sycamore Row, in which he once again found himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial.

Now, in A Time for Mercy, Jake is the court-appointed lawyer for Drew Gamble, a young man accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance sees it another way. Once he learns the details of the case, he realises he has to do everything he can to save Drew...who is 16. His commitment to the truth puts Jake's career and the safety of his family at risk.

Filled with all the courtroom machinations, small-town intrigues and plot twists that have become hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy emphatically confirms John Grisham's reputation as America's favourite storyteller.

There is a time to kill, a time for justice, and a time for mercy.

You won’t regret this

The reading is excellent. Lovely story about ford counties best lawyer.
I enjoyed this, it’s a difficult topic and feels real but Jake and co make it worth the angst.

My favourite author did not disappoint

His ability to develop characters into sympathetic beings from those whom might otherwise be viewed with disdain is second to none.

An enjoyable story to listen to.

Fantastic story which I recommend to everyone.

I really enjoyed listening to this story and I thought that the narrator was very good as well. I simply did not want to stop listening to it and it kept me interested until the end. I was enthralled by the characters and it restored some of my faith in human nature.

Best John Grisham book in a long time

Wow, I literally couldn’t stop listening.

I managed the whole 20 hours in 3 days between working.

The ending was a little disappointing. But I will definitely listen to it again.

Awful Scottish accent

This is a John Grisham so is reliably listenable and the characters - their various conflicts and camaraderie’s - are hookey. It is such a shame!!! That an otherwise really good and reliable narrator (and I’ve known Jeff Harding so the exact same thing - although his accents are amazing now so he must have worked hard to improve them) can’t be arsed (quite frankly) to bother to even get close to a Scottish accent. This character crops up enough to have warranted at least a stab at getting it right. The narrator’s attempt to affect a Scottish accent ate so incredibly bad it brings the whole thing down. He seems to think rolling his ‘R’s is the key but to anyone from the uk, let alone Scotland it’s appalling. Why is it only US narrators that don’t even try to get any accent apart from the American variations under their belts? And if they can’t be bothered, at least change the characters origin to being from Ohio or somewhere. There is absolutely no point in subjecting listeners to this sort of embarrassing attempt.

As always, Great writing and narration

Michael Beck is an excellent narrator able to capture the essence of Grisham's work. Each character comes to life in this engaging story typical of the author's style. Thoroughly enjoyed it as always.

5 1/2 * book

I’ve always been a fan of John Grisham and this did not let me down. Micheal Beck, excellent as ever ( in the main). Because of the length of the book it did feel a little soap operaish, but not in a bad way. We already know all the characters well, those of us who have followed this author, but this gave us the opportunity to get to know all the new characters well, which was nice.
