About this listen

In 1137 the ambitious head of Shrewsbury Abbey has decided to acquire the remains of Saint Winifred for his Benedictine order. Brother Cadfael is part of the expedition sent to her final resting place in Wales, where they find the villagers passionately divided by the Benedictines' offer for the saint's relics.

Canny, wise and all too worldly, Cadfael isn't surprised when this taste for bones leads to bloody murder. The leading opponent to moving the grave has been shot dead with a mysterious arrow, and some say Winifred herself dealt the blow. Brother Cadfael knows that a carnal hand did the killings, but he doesn't know that his plan to unearth a murderer may dig up a case of love and justice, where the wages of sin may be scandal - or his own ruin.

This is my first taste of Ellis Peters, and I have to say I'm enjoying it very much. It is an excellent story and the narrator, Stephen Thorne, gives a rich variety of voices to the characters.

The first of her Brother Cadfael murder mysteries, set in the 12th Century, is based on a true story of the removal of a saint’s relics from a Welsh village to the Benedictine Abbey at Shrewsbury. It might not be a strictly realistic representation of the period, but that doesn’t matter in a novel of this style. It is easy and enjoyable to listen to, and I would recommend it without hesitation.

Characters were brought to life. Narrator told story well. Really enjoyed it. Look forward to reading further Ellis Peter's Cadfael titles.

A lovely reading from Stephen Thorne, as always. I remember buying this series of books for my Mum over 30 years ago. Loved them then and love them now.

Easy listening.

If you like your crime cozy, this is the series for you. There's definitely something idyllic about these books, lead by a monk who is incredibly good at reading people, and who has an abundance of understanding and forgiveness for them, but who is also firm in his sense of justice. And he's wise too, and knowledgeable, and so is his partner in mystery-solving, Hugh Beringar, and they make a fantastic team. There's usually a young couple that need a little help to get together, or an innocent person who needs to be cleared of suspicion. Oh, and Peters loves describing nature and people in absolutely lush tones. I adore these books. Stephen Thorne narrates the whole thing beautifully.

I love this series!

Not sure how I came across Brother Cadfael or how he came across me, but somehow found my way to these audiobooks. They’re now a constant friend to me with Stephen Thorne’s soothing voice. Like others I absolutely need Cadfael to be Welsh so I’ve shunned the other narrators. You can find the rest of the Cadfael audios read by Stephen by googling for them and an American company sells the whole series for about 40 dollars. I bought a cheapie MP3 player on Amazon and loaded the series onto it and it’s just like Audible. Now enjoying the rest of the series read this way with the spirit that Stephen Thorne injects into them. Cadfael is my guru and I’d happily follow him into battle!

I’m a Cadfael convert

this is possibly the least gripping of the Cadfael stories but nonetheless he does a great job of narrating and makes the characters interesting even with a thinner plot line

Another great read by Steven Thorne
