About this listen

Twenty-one year old Violet Kale has fallen out of love with life. A dissolute figure, she drifts along with her friend Lisa (mother of a baby daughter Maria), reluctant to take responsibility for anything except her own pleasure. When Violet wakes up after a three-day drug and alcohol binge to the sound of her friend's baby Maria crying with hunger, on a whim she steals Maria away, heading on a journey to a new land, and seeing in the child a chance of a new future, and a hope for salvation....

I loved it but wished a few of the unexplained things were cleared up by the end. I was happy they all got away and had a nice life though.

Very good book

Without giving too much away this is not easy to listen to. It is a clever story, well presented, but it is just really depressing. I feel that there could've been so much more, and I really did not enjoy the ending.

Not an easy listen.

Laura wake has written a very clever storyline which after only a few sentences of reading, I didn’t want to put down. The main character, although committing the crime of kidnap, is still extremely likeable and I found myself routing for her often. Feeling many emotions triggered by the story I almost cried in more than one occasion and I loved the visual descriptions which made it very easy to picture the scene. The narrator was well suited to the role and really did this story justice. I cannot wait for Wake’s second novel to become available, she has such an extraordinary talent.

Excellent! dark, suspenseful, realistic…

Found this book really slow. Kept waiting for something exciting to happen, but was left feeling a bit bored. Don't think I can recommend. Narrator was excellent though

Disappointing

This was a fantastic story with multiple levels and interesting takes and explorations into mental health. However, as many of my fellow reviewers have mentioned, there are so many loose ends.
*spoilers ahead*
Why did Violet hallucinate the Trisha couple on the boat? Was it sleep deprivation or more? Did the real Maria in fact die because of the neglect of Violet and Lisa? Did Violet then kidnap another little girl, another “Maria” from the Trisha couple? What happened with the lunchtime detentions with the sociopathic teacher? Why was Violet estranged from her parents? Plus about 10000 other unanswered questions. It could be that this is the start of a series and I really hope so, because I enjoyed this book so much! It sort of reminded me of my favourite series “Sweet Pea” by CJ Skuse… if you haven’t read that and enjoyed this, definitely check that one out too!

I want more!

But got sucked in. It was quite sad at times and almost hopeless steering towards a bad ending or unpleasant climax but it was surprisingly captivating. The narrator was a big part of it to bring the story across. I was wondering about a lot of the loose ends along the way but it wasn’t bothering me finally as I think it was meant to be happening in our heads what to make of it. I hope there will be more from the author but it’s not an easy success to follow I guess. I’d definitely be on the waiting list though.

Didn’t want to like it

Loved this. Haven’t stopped thinking about the story and the characters since finishing it.

What an author! So imaginative and the narrator is absolutely brilliant.

Raw, gritty and real. Highly recommend.

Outstanding!

I think this is the weirdest book I’ve ever read! It seems to start as one story and ends up being something completely different. I’m none the wiser as to what the story was actually about.

What have I just read?!
