About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Featuring an exclusive Q&A between Anthony Horowitz and Adam Hamdy.
I couldn't see the sea from my bedroom, but I could hear the waves breaking in the distance. They reminded me that I was on a tiny island. And I was trapped.
There has never been a murder on Alderney.
It's a tiny island, just three miles long and a mile and a half wide. The perfect location for a brand-new literary festival. Private investigator Daniel Hawthorne has been invited to talk about his new book. The writer, Anthony Horowitz, travels with him.
Very soon they discover that not all is as it should be. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour.
The visiting authors - including a blind medium, a French performance poet and a celebrity chef - seem to be harbouring any number of unpleasant secrets.
When the festival's wealthy sponsor is found brutally killed, Alderney goes into lockdown and Hawthorne knows that he doesn't have to look too far for suspects.
There's no escape. The killer is still on the island. And there's about to be a second death....

A great murder mystery with wonderful twists
A great murder mystery set in Alderney with wonderful twists. You’re pulled in again into the world of Hawthorne and ‘Tony’. A literary festival, what could go wrong? And why is Hawthorne so interested in going?

Love this series
I really enjoyed this latest book in the series. I’ve been to the Channel Island but not to Alderney. The Island setting was reminiscent of other “who done its “set in the same remote and isolated places. The relationship between the “Tony” and Hawthorne is interesting and we learn a bit more about Hawthorne’s previous life with a big hook at the end for the next book . A clever plot read perfectly by Rory Kinnear . The bonus interview with Anthony Horowitz at the end was a nice surprise .

Great story, shame about the squawking women.
I have loved each of the Horowitz /Hawthorn books; such an original idea and great stories to boot. However, Rory Kinnear’s narration has got more extreme as time has progressed. In this latest book the various women’s voices were inconsistant and most of the time the women didn’t actually speak, they squawked. Indeed even some of the men squawked. Such voices are thoroughly unconvincing and took the edge off an otherwise terrific story.

Brilliant story
Love these books - Anthony Horowitz said he has eleven more - at every two years that’s 22 years - I’ll be 92 or past caring - I’m desperate to know Hawthornes story but doubt I will - anyway excellent work - enjoyed the interview too

Absolutely loved it
I have really enjoyed all 3 ‘Hawthorne’ books. They are so cleverly written. The author makes a wonderful and humorous contribution as the stooge, Hawthorne is such an interesting character, the plots are excellent and it’s so well read by Rory Kinnear. A real page turner. Highly recommend.

Clever writing as always
Maybe a little easier to predict the ending than others in this series but still very enjoyable

Interesting story
I don’t think she needed to justify some of the stories and decisions she or Barrack made. This didn’t add anything to the story and just fans the critics flames.
