Summary

Maeve Binchy's best-selling novels not only tell wonderful stories, they also give an insight into how Ireland has changed over the decades but how people remain the same: they still fall in love, sometimes unsuitably; they still have hopes and dreams; they have deep, long-tanding friendships and some that fall apart.

From her earliest writing to her most recent, Maeve's work has included wonderfully nostalgic pieces and also sharp, often witty writing which is insightful and topical. But at the heart of all Maeve's fiction are the people and their relationships with each other.

A Few of the Girls is a glorious collection of the very best of her writing, full of the warmth, charm and humour that has always been an essential part of all of Maeve's writing.

Read by Kate Binchy with an introduction read by Gordon Snell.

Lovely, heartbreaking stories

What made the experience of listening to A Few of the Girls the most enjoyable?

Knowing something about the context she is writing about...the echoes of Edna O'Brian and other good Irish writers

What other book might you compare A Few of the Girls to, and why?

Edna O'Brian - not as complex obviously but just as nuanced in parts.

What about Kate Binchy and Gordon Snell ’s performance did you like?

The dialogue, real and rich.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The introduction by her husband.

Any additional comments?

I'm glad I tried this, enjoyed it very much.

Soothing

Took me a while to get into because of the short stories and I was waiting for a linking theme but after a few I found it lovely I have enjoyed MB's long novels more than short stories and feel sad that there will be no more
RIP lovely lady

Disappointing

In the past have read Maeve Binchy novels and enjoyed them. This was not the case here. One story much the same as the next. Narration very poor too. I returned the book.
