陰翳礼讃は昭和８年に執筆された随筆で、日本の生活が西洋化し日本の美が失われていくことが書かれている。
今日、日本風の家屋を建てて住もうとすると、電気やガス、水道等が日本座敷と調和するよう取り付けに苦心を払うことになる。これは、家を建てたことがなくても、料理屋旅館等の座敷を見てみれば気がつくことである。電燈は時代おくれの乳白ガラスの浅いシェードをつけて、球をムキ出しに見せて置く方が自然で風流である。しかし扇風機などというものになると、あの音響といい形態といい、未だに日本座敷とは調和しにくい。
私は、京都や奈良の寺院へ行って、昔風のうすぐらい掃除の行き届いた厠へ案内される毎に、つくづく日本建築の有難みを感じる。日本の厠は実に精神が安まるように出来ている。それらは必ず母屋から離れていて、青葉や苔の匂いがする植え込みの陰に設けていて、うすぐらい光線の中にうずくまり、障子の反射を受けながら瞑想に耽り、窓外の庭のけしきを眺める気持は何ともいえない。住宅中で何処よりも不潔であるべき場所を、雅致のある場所に変え、花鳥風月と結び付けて、日本の建築の中で一番風流に出来ているのは厠であるともいえなくはない。西洋人は不浄扱いにし、公衆の前で口にすることをさえ忌むのに比べれば、我等の方が遙かに賢明であり、真に風雅の骨髄を得ている。
