　橘氏は、「幸福」は、しっかりした土台の上に設計するべしとし、その人生の「インフラストラクチャー」を前述の3つに対応させて、以下に求めます。
「金融資産（資本）」「人的資本」「社会資本」。
この3つの資本の組み合わせによって生まれる「人生の8パターン」によって、すべてのひとびとの「幸福」のカタチが説明できるとしています。社会資本（中学からの友達ネットワーク）しかない田舎のマイドルヤンキーは、「プア充」。「友だちネットワーク」から排除されるとたちまち3つとも持っていない「貧困」に陥る。金融資産がなくても、高収入を得られる職業につき、友だちや恋人がいれば、人的資本と社会資本を持っている「リア充」。人的資本と金融資産があって社会資本がないのは、「金持ち」の典型、という具合。3つの資本をすべてそろえることは難しいが、せめて2つをそろえれば「幸福」といえる状態になるのではないか。では、どうすれば2つをそろえることができるのか…、そして「幸福」になれるのか、3つの資本を解説しながらその答えを追いかけます。
