｢ひとつ例にとると、『傘を探す』という作品。僕はこの、失われた雨傘を探して夜の街を、人から人へとめぐり歩くストーリーをいまでも面白いと思います。もし若い佐藤正午がこれを書いていなければ、いま僕の手で新たに挑戦してみたいくらいです。短編集『夏の情婦』を読み返して、この五編がいずれも、書くべきときに書かれた小説である、と三十年後のいま思える、それが僕の率直な感想です｣（本書「三十年後のあとがき」より）「鳩の撃退法」、「月の満ち欠け」と、次々に小説読みたちを唸らせる傑作を発表し続けている著者が、「永遠の1/2」でのデビュー直後に執筆した恋愛小説五編を収録。「傘を探す」の他には、小説賞を受賞した三十一歳のぼくがネクタイを介して大学生の自分と年上女性との恋愛を追憶する「二十歳」、男と女のフラジャイルな関係を気だるい夏の残暑のなかに再現してみせた「夏の情婦」など。いずれも恋愛をテーマにしているものの、その語り口は変幻自在で、すでに「小説巧者」の片鱗をうかがわせる作品ばかりだ。
