新型コロナウイルスの「次」に来る、動物由来のウイルスは何？ 本書では批判を恐れない提言で注目されるウイルス学者が、ペットのイヌやネコが媒介するウイルス、計50頭のニホンザルが血を流してばたばた死んだ原因となったサルレトロウイルス4型など、変異すれば人間社会を脅かす可能性があるウイルスを紹介します。

しかし実は、病原性のウイルスは全体のごく一部。病気を起こすどころか、1億年以上前に哺乳類の進化を促したウイルスもあります。すなわち、宿主のDNAを書き換える力を持ち、哺乳類の胎盤の形成に関与したといわれているレトロウイルスです。本書ではレトロウイルスの驚くべき力についても解説します。

さらに、「そもそもウイルスとは何か？」、「新型コロナウイルスのワクチン」などのテーマも解説。「多次元」のウイルス学を提唱している著者が京都大学で行なっている、1回生（全学部）向けや医学部2回生向けの授業などの内容を収録した、著者初の単著です。高校生でも十分理解できるよう、わかりやすい解説を目指しました。
