Рассказ "Под оборогом" был написан в 1905 году и вошел в сборник "На лоне природы и другие рассказы". Рассказ принадлежит к лучшим образцам украинской малой психологической прозы начала XX века. Сам автор считал его одним из самых характерных среди автобиографических произведений, поскольку оно дает "в значительной части правдивый образ с детских лет". Однако в предисловии к сборнику предостерегал не воспринимать эти произведения как часть его биографии, а только лишь, как литературные произведения.
