The narration really made this for me; Sebastian York and CJ Bloom can always be relied on to bring it and there was so much to play with here. There is a lot of angst, Jax's mental health as well as some humour from the side characters and plenty of spice. There are also some really heavy themes with both performances lifting these elements of the book.

The story itself was a solid 3 - I liked the 50/50 POV split but some of the chapters were really short and the POV would go back and forth in the same scene which lost a little of my engagement . I liked Jax and Sofia but I felt the chemistry never really got back to that initial few chapters and I also struggled with Anna - her character was just a massive contradiction she seemed to have a personality change from one chapter to the next. I absolutely loved Nikolai, Alexei, Mikhail and Lara though - they were so much fun whenever they breezed in! I'd love to see more of them in the series.

3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

This is the first book in the Beneath The Secrets Series, a mafia romance. Sofia and Jax's story is captivating. Their story is very emotional, passionate, and enthralling, filled with drama, angst, suspense, and twists and turns. Jax, the King of Chaos, is enigmatic, self-destructive, possessive, and protective. Sofia is beautiful, strong, and caring. Their story is heart-wrenching. The supporting characters are interesting. I can't wait to know more about Nikolai and Alexei. This is an excellent forbidden romance. I highly recommend it. ** be aware this story has triggers ** Looking forward to listening to Caged, the next book in the series.

At one point I skipped 30 chapters in this book and picked it up like I’d missed nothing. It had every trope there is. Plot points came out of nowhere. Not for me. Narrators were great.
