Johannes Gillhoff (1861-1930) verfasste diesen Briefroman nach eigenem Bekunden auf der Grundlage tatsächlich vorgefundener Briefe eines im 19. Jahrhundert aus Mecklenburg nach Amerika ausgewanderten Tagelöhnersohnes an seinen ehemaligen Dorfschullehrer. Die Briefe sind überwiegend heiter-komischer Natur, zum Teil aber auch sehr nachdenklich und anrührend. Wenn es eine mecklenburgische Nationalliteratur gäbe: dieses Buch würde dazu gehören. Der Text ist mit norddeutscher Dialektfärbung gesprochen; das Buch enthält auch plattdeutsche Einsprengsel.
